Climb 6

Climb Number: 6

Date: 12/22/08

Location: N 45.394, W 123.192

Tree Type:

Tree Name:

Weather: Cool, rainy earlier but dry during climb.

Placement: Line previously placed and tied up to lower limbs. Line accessed by DRT with Blake's hitch, then descended down to pull climbing rope through already placed anchor high on tree.

Rope: The Fly, 200 feet. Poison Ivy, 200 feet.

Anchor Type: 3 half-hitches around trunk and tied with a timber knot.

Ascent: Yo-yo with Petzl I'D

Pitches: No additional

Movement in the tree: Up and down climb only

Decent: Petzl I'D

Problems:
None major. Poor view with lots of bushy branches around. Unable to climb higher without removing limbs due to being near the top (within 15 feet) and a ring of small tight branches higher up.

Things that went well:
1) Having zing-it line already placed to pull rope through was nice
2) A nice, quick but satisfying climb
3) Tree did have some height, estimated climbed to about 75 feet. Posted to facebook from highest point.

Climb 5

Climb Number
: 5

Date: 2/20/09

Location: N 45 16.329, W 123 14.458

Tree Type: Quercus garryana (Oregon White Oak)

Tree Name: Still un-named

Weather: Sunny, cool.

Placement: Big Shot 14 oz bag and Zing-it line.

Rope: The Fly, 200 feet.

Anchor Type: SRT anchored around branch with screw link and zing-it attached for removal.

Ascent: Initial: Petzl ascender pair with straps. Secondary: Yo-yo set up with Petzl I'D

Pitches: Lateral pitches in tree to other local branches using target line and weight bag.

Movement in the tree: Chameleon rope and Cinch in a DRT on one side, and the primary line with a Petzl I'D on the other for stabilization.

Decent: Petzl I'D on a SRT line.

Problems:
1) Tree movement was pathetic. Original tie-in line placed too far laterally to get to areas on the other side of the tree. Could only "work" one side. Would have had to have placed my original tie-in higher and more centrally to take advantage of the broader canopy.
2) Spent a lot of time trying to move around a very little bit.
3) Rigged hanging chair, grabbed lunch bag and it promptly ripped on the bottom spilling lunch contents 40 feet below to the ground.
4) Removing tie-in zing-it line got snagged. I had to re-ascend to free it.
5) Overall, the tree was kind of grumpy that day.

Things that went well:
1) Just the fact that the sun was out and I could climb
2) Remembered to get picture and location of tree
